Apple's AirTag is a GPS tracking device. AirTag is a key finder that assists people in locating personal items such as keys, purses, clothing, small electrical devices, and vehicles. AirTags use Apple's crowdsourced Find My network to track down lost objects, which is expected to grow to one billion devices by early 2021. Find My devices detect and anonymously report emitted Bluetooth signals. AirTags work with any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch that runs iOS 14.5 or later. Users can use UWB (ultra-wideband) technology to more precisely locate items utilizing the built-in U1 chip on iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE 2nd generation). AirTag was released on April 30.

The Find My app can be used to interface with AirTags. The AirTag can be used to play a sound from the app. iPhones with the U1 processor can employ "Precision Tracking" to give precise distance and direction to an AirTag. Precision Tracking makes use of ultra-wideband technology.

AirTags aren't meant to be used as satellite navigation devices. By leveraging Bluetooth signals from other anonymous iOS and iPadOS devices across the world, AirTags are located on a map via the Find My app. An iOS/iPadOS device will warn its owner if someone else's AirTag appears to be with them for an extended period of time, rather than with the AirTag's owner.

If an AirTag is out of range of any Apple device for more than 8 to 24 hours, it will begin to beep to notify the owner that an AirTag has been placed in their goods.

Users can report a misplaced AirTag and leave a phone number and message. The "identify missing item" feature within the Find My app, which uses near-field communication (NFC) technology, allows any iPhone user to view this phone number and message. Additionally, NFC-enabled Android and Windows 10 Mobile phones can tap an AirTag to be redirected to a webpage with the message and phone number.

AirTag requires an Apple ID and iOS 14.5 or later on the iPad. Bluetooth tracking's maximum range is predicted to be roughly 100 meters. Each Apple ID can only have 16 AirTags.
